Leadership and Management of Science
I defined the management role as being concerned with planning, organising and controlling in the sense of measuring and monitoring outcomes in Research and Science. Leadership on the other hand is more concerned with inspiring and motivating. So leadership and management aren’t the same thing but they are clearly linked and complementary. In a Research and Science environment, the role of the manager is to organise a team of professionals not just to maximize efficiency, but to nurture skills, develop talent and inspire results whilst recognising that most people don’t want to feel managed but they do want to be led.
